P.J’s, Wellies and a Raincoat

My rant for the day…

With so many different clothing brands for kids on the market these days, you would think somebody would get it right. Since Pickles was born I have had such trouble finding clothes that fit her. Come to think about it, I don’t think I’ve purchased many clothes that fit her properly.

We were down at M&S this afternoon on the hunt for P.J’s, Wellies and a Raincoat.  Entering the childrens section, I noticed bright pink raincoats and woolly hats with scarves and a few pairs of gloves. Here we are in the height of a heat wave (apparently) and one of the biggest chains in the UK is selling raincoats and winter hats. Hmmmmm. My enthusiasm was very confused as I was pleased to see a beautiful red and blue raincoat embellished with tiny little hearts all over it, a fleecy hood attached and lovely long arms. But the other half of me was longing to buy her a swimsuit instead.

So, I grabbed the 12-18 month size, (Pickles is 17 months old) and threw the coat in the trolley. It looked a little big but that was OK as it meant Pickles would get more wear out of it.  Fastforward……… we get home and I try the coat on Pickles. ‘It looked a little big’ I thought. I couldn’t believe it. Again I am faced with what should be fairly straight forward, little clothes for a little person. The label on the raincoat told me it was Pickles size, yet this gorgeous little raincoat with hearts on it went almost to her ankles.

I just don’t understand how Pickles, although small for her age, can be wearing almost all sizes since she was born. I tell the truth, pure honesty, she has one shirt that she has almost grown out of which has a label on it, a true label, that says 3 – 6 months. She is in dresses that have true labels of 12 – 18 months, trousers that are 9-12 months and now a raincoat.

It would be so nice if the clothing manufacturers actually worked with each other and tried to design sizes that are much more universal. Just like the adult versions of Petite, Regular and Long sizes. Oh how simple shopping for Pickles clothes would be.

And the Wellies……

I have been searching for a pair of wellies for Pickles, size 3, for months now seeing as our beautiful sumer has turned out a little wet. But they don’t exist. They all start at size 4. Ahhhhhhh! I have no trouble buying walking shoes at size 3 or 3 1/2 so why not wellies? Obviously welly manufacturers think that little feet aren’t big enough for rain puddles.

Please clothing manufacturer, start paying attention. Babies are not generic. Babies come in all shapes and sizes and so should your clothes.

  1. Just stumbled upon your blog…completely agree about the clothing sizes.

At all the clothing stores, and everything is just 2 sizes big for her.

All her clothes have to be taken in, and then slowly let out as she grows up. Not too bad though, because she does get more wear out of them

    Love your blog, btw…
